ABYA Information

Reminder, the ABYA informational presentation can be located on their website at www.abya.org

The ABYA is also a leading organization regarding legislation in our state, but needs our support to continue the battle to manage water diversion for the great lakes. As avid boating enthusiast we remind you to write your state representatives to ask for state managed legislation for water diversion, and preserve our waters for the younger generations to come

Interesting notes, “did you know……?”

The Noble Odyssey Foundation is the organization that owns a familiar site to all of us on Clinton River, the “Pride of Michigan”. I often wondered if this boat actually left port. Well, it not only does leave, it does much more that I could have imagined. As a solely volunteered organization, the Pride of Michigan is an actual training program for sea cadets. As part of this training program the sea cadets not only man the ship under way, they also maintain all aspects of the ship. So what do they do while out? We thought the following was notable:

  • Training program of sea cadets that is solely voluntary.
  • Sea diving certification for the sea cadets.
  • Research programs that are sponsored by government grants and other donations.
  • Did you know….the current low water levels are nothing to what they were in the past? Try 300 feet below today! Lake Huron was actually two (2) lakes. In fact, there is a “lost” forest off the coast of eastern Michigan. This definitely led researchers to now understand why artifacts were not found on the current shores of the great lakes. With water levels so low, the findings are hundreds of feet off shore under water.
    • The “Norwood Project, Underwater Adventure into the Past”, is an extensive research program studying the past which is located under water in Lake Michigan.
    • The Pride also participates in Homeland security exercises in places like Soo Saint Marie for bridge and locks bombing drills.
